Definition
Metal bellow is made from thin metal sheets that are formed or welded into a corrugated shape. This design allows flexibility while still handling pressure temperature and corrosive conditions.

Functions
Metal bellow accommodates axial lateral and angular movement. It compensates for thermal expansion and contraction. In mechanical seals it maintains sealing force. In piping systems it reduces stress on connected equipment.

Materials
Common materials include stainless steel Inconel Hastelloy Monel and other high alloy metals. Material selection depends on operating temperature pressure and the type of fluid.

Applications
Metal bellow is used in mechanical seals expansion joints piping systems aerospace equipment vacuum systems and high temperature or high pressure services.

Advantages
It can work at high temperatures and pressures. It has excellent corrosion resistance. It does not use elastomers so it is suitable for severe and dirty services. It provides long service life when properly designed.

Types
Metal bellow can be formed or welded. Welded metal bellow provides higher flexibility and better fatigue life. Formed metal bellow is more economical for moderate duty applications.
